April - Challenge #12: Fairy Tales

Hey, it's our one year anniversary! *confetti and glitter* Thank you for playing and watching!

March is drawing to its close, and our April challenge is about to begin. For our next challenge, Yohji gets to be a real white knight, Sanzo dodges the advances of a lecherous wolf, Hakkai turns into a flock of birds, Aya trades his soul to a witch to save his sister, and Omi passes out poisoned fruit.

That's right--we're doing fairy tales!

Fairy tales can be defined as "a story involving fantastic forces and beings." Wikipedia says the exact definition of "fairy tale" is a source of some contention: some say it involves a sense of the fantastic, some say "transformation" is usually involved, and yet others say "it moves in an unreal world without definite locality or definite creatures and is filled with the marvelous"; most agree it doesn't actually have to involve fairies at all. We're pretty laidback around here--use your own take, and have fun! Make up your own fairy tale, recast a favorite, reimagine a classic--go wild.

If you would like some inspiration, wikipedia offers a list of some fairy tales and some common fairy tale motifs.

Also, random inspirational pics:

Further (and larger) fairy tale-themed works by almost all these artists can be found on flickr or the marvelous Golden Age Comic Book Stories site (http://goldenagecomicbookstories.blogspot.com/). I'm cheating on the Sam Weber--he's a contemporary artist illustrating Greek mythology there--but the image is so wonderfully evocative, and I'm insane about it (http://sampaints.com/2009/11/a-memory-of-wind/).

Posting begins on the stroke of midnight, April 1!

Great idea! Though a bit unfair on both Omi and Sanzo.

OMGomgomgomg. I have loved all the challenges I've seen far (and have been sad that I haven't had the time to contribute anything) but this one, OMG!! This is the best EVER. :D

I love you for the moodboard. So so so much! Thank you for introducing me to John Bauer - never heard of him before, what a shame. D:

Are fic snippets (bits of not-yet-complete works) allowed? I doubt CinderGojyo will ever be ready for the ball in time XD

I had forgotten how utterly gorgeous are always the illustrations for this kind of stories. I'm in love with the first one, so graceful and expressive when it should look affected or something.

I have a couple of ideas brewing, I must do something for this prompt.

Aw fuck I don't think I'm going to get out of this one. Especially since I still need to write the compagnonfic to the fairytale I have already written, about not-quite-prince Goku, the purple-eyed not-quite-maiden and the not-quite-evil-but-quite-mad stepmother. *sigh*
