This very day I had a friend who likes Sanzo/Hakkai (and only Sanzo/Hakkai) admit that she has lurked until recently because of her perception that no one else is interested in her OTP. At this point, there seems to be more fandom interest in Sanzo/Hakkai than Sanzo/Gojyo, although I suspect the actual numbers are close. Some people ship both. On the other hand, she also freely admits that she's seen fewer ship wars and wank in the Saiyuki fandom than in her main fandom, FMA.
As for me, while I think Gojyo/Hakkai is the easiest ship to see canonically, my preferred ships are Sanzo and any other member of the ikkou. I guess that makes Sanzo the ikkou's bicycle. (Not what I suspect he thinks of himself!) But while 393 is and will always be my favorite, I would get bored reading nothing but 393, and my preferences between the other two ships switch back and forth over time. I think Sanzo/Hakkai makes more sense, but it's probably easier to write Sanzo/Gojyo.
